Aldi has held onto the title of Britain’s cheapest supermarket for the 12th month in a row, based on a basket of 40 groceries worth an average of £68.60.

The German grocer was crowned winner for May once again by consumer watchdog Which? while Lidl came in second at £70.51.

Asda was named the cheapest across the Big 4 grocers, at £76.45, while Tesco was only 43p pricier than Sainsbury’s at £77.56.

Meanwhile, Ocado and Waitrose were the most expensive for a basket of groceries worth £83.90 and £86.81 respectively.

For a full trolley of 131 products, excluding Aldi and Lidl, Asda was also crowned the cheapest supermarket for the fifth consecutive month at £332.40.

Morrisons came close behind, at just £2.07 more for the trolley of groceries, while Waitrose was the priciest at £363.99.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Which? retail editor Ele Clark said: “The price of food and drink is continuing to soar, as people suffer through the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades.

“It’s no surprise to see many shoppers turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl when our research shows they could make savings of more than £18 on a basket of everyday groceries.”

Which? looks at how much the UK’s biggest supermarkets charge customers every month, looking both at both a basket of groceries and a larger trolley.

Last week, it was reported that food inflation had fallen for the first time in almost two years, with figures from the British Retail Consortium revealing it had dropped from 15.7% to 15.4% in May.

However, the figures were still found to be 15% higher year on year.
