Aldi ditches ‘Use by’ dates on fresh milk

Aldi is to remove the ‘Use By’ dates from its fresh milk line in a bid to reduce food waste.

The German grocer will instead introduce ‘Best Before’ dates on the packaging across its stores in England and Wales.

The change will be rolled out by the end of the year and forms part of the supermarket’s goal to halve its food waste by 2030.

According to waste reduction charity WRAP, nearly 300,000 tonnes of milk is wasted by UK households each year due to it not being consumed by the Use By date.

Aldi said it was encouraging shoppers to perform a ‘sniff test’ to work out whether their milk is still fine to consume.

Sustainability director Liz Fox said: “We are constantly working to be a more sustainable retailer and we are dedicated to preventing food waste wherever we can, both in our stores and helping customers throw away less food at home.

“We hope shoppers embrace this change and look, smell, and taste their milk to see if it’s still fine to use, so together we can reduce the effect food waste has on the environment.”

The supermarket joined Tesco, Sainsbury’s and M&S last year in removing its Best Before dates on over 60 fresh fruit and vegetables.
