Watch: B&Q marks 40 years of ‘You Can Do It’ in new ad campaign

B&Q has unveiled its latest ad campaign which puts a spotlight back on its 40-year-old ‘You Can Do It’ slogan.

The DIY retailer’s new advertising campaign, which launched on TV and social media, looks to encourage consumers to take on neglected DIY jobs in their homes.

The 60-second clip puts a playful-spin on various scenarios of people standing in front of their next project, such as a woman with a sledgehammer ready to knock down a wall or a guy sitting on the floor ready to paint the hallway, with a voiceover saying phrases such as, “You can’t”, “It’s too big”, “It’s too fiddly”, “You don’t have the eye”, “You don’t have the knack”.

The voiceover then goes on to say “The voice is loud but guess what a sledgehammer is louder”, and returns back to the woman showing her carrying out the task.

It ends with the line “You can do it, when you B&Q it”.

The new ‘You Can Do It’ campaign, developed with London-based creative studio Uncommon, will run across TV and video on demand on ITV, Channel 4 and Sky for the rest of the month.

It will be promoted digitally, across social media and in out-of-home executions from March.

B&Q marketing director Tom Hampson said: “‘You Can Do It’ has been part of B&Q’s story for nearly 40 years. It’s one of our most distinctive brand assets and we’re delighted to be putting a spotlight on it with our brand-new campaign.

“Not only that, but its relevance today has never felt more important as we know that many put off starting home improvement projects.

“Overcoming that doubt and believing that you can do it is made easier when you have a trusted partner like B&Q to empower you to get started.

“We hope our ‘You Can Do It’ campaign can help inspire confidence in those embarking on their DIY journeys.”
