Aldi has met its commitment to sell 100% cage-free eggs more than a year ahead of schedule.

The discount grocer pledged in 2016 to phase out the sale of eggs and egg ingredients from caged hens by 2025.

However, it revealed this week that all its stores now only sell cage-free eggs.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Improving animal welfare is incredibly important to us at Aldi, and by working with our suppliers we have been able to hit our 100% cage-free target more than a year early.

“Our British suppliers are at the heart of our business and without them Aldi wouldn’t be where it is today and we are proud to work with so many UK egg farmers.”

The grocery giant has invested more than £50m into UK egg farming and producers over the past two years to boost the British cage-free egg industry.

Last week, the discounter revealed it was investing £3bn into beef suppliers over the next five years to allow farmers to plan confidently and provide security for supply chains up and down the country.
