Aldi is rolling out new packaging for its fresh chicken products, reflecting updated stocking density guidelines as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare.

Shoppers will be provided with new labels on its packaging from 30 October, highlighting the higher welfare changes to the supermarket’s poultry range.

The change, which was first announced earlier this year, will see all of its fresh chickens have 20% more space than industry standards.

The move comes after the German retailer stopped selling eggs from caged hens in August, while meeting its target to go cage-free “more than a year ahead of schedule”.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Animal welfare is of paramount importance to us, and we’ve been working hard with our suppliers to reduce stocking density to help us improve the welfare conditions for chickens.

“We’re already one of the UK’s largest providers of chicken and we’re proud that from next week, we can offer our customers access to higher welfare chicken at our unbeatable Aldi value.”

The move comes after rival supermarket Lidl unveiled plans back in March to improve its chicken welfare standards by increasing space to its own-label fresh chicken by 20%, putting it above industry standards.

The transition, which began in the summer with plans to finish by early 2025, involves reducing the maximum stocking density to 30kg per square metre.
