Usdaw has urged more retailers to shut up shop on Boxing Day, as Poundland joins John Lewis, Waitrose, and Home Bargains in confirming its closure on 26 December.
It comes after the trade union has long campaigned for the longest possible break, noting that stores remaining open should “only be staffed by volunteers”.
Usdaw national officer Bally Auluk said: “After discussions with Poundland, we very much welcome the company again closing all their stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, to give their staff a proper break over the festive season.
“This is a much-appreciated continuation of past years’ festive closures.”
He continued: “We don’t think it is too much to ask to give shop workers the longest possible break over Christmas and New Year.
“We now hope that other retailers will follow suit, by closing their stores to help workers enjoy the festive season and give them a well-deserved breather.”
The news follows the discount retailer’s recruitment drive for over 1,000 new seasonal colleagues to fill temporary roles in its stores across the UK and Ireland.
Poundland people director Simon Wells said: “We have brilliant colleagues here at Poundland & Dealz who work incredibly hard throughout the year, bringing our brands to life every day and supporting our customers.
“But we know they all particularly shine at Christmas, bringing the magic to our stores that our customers know and love. We’re delighted to be able to support them with a well-earned rest once the festive season is over.”
