Foot Locker welcomes former Tesco boss as international president

Foot Locker has named ex-Tesco CEO Matthew Barnes as its new international president.

The exec will step into the role on 3 December, taking the helm across Europe, Asia and Australia.

The appointment was made by the footwear specialist’s owner, Dick’s Sporting Goods, with Barnes reporting directly to CEO of Dick’s, Ed Stack.

Barnes served as Tesco’s UK CEO from 2024 to May 2025.



Prior to this, he spent more than 26 years at Aldi headquarters Aldi Süd Holding, most recently working as its group CEO and international board member in Austria. 

Barnes said: “I am honoured to join Foot Locker, a brand with deep recognition across the globe, at such a pivotal and exciting time for the sports retail industry.”

Stack added: “We’re taking decisive actions to clear unproductive inventory and lay the foundation for a fresh start in 2026. With our strengthened management team, including Matthew Barnes, we are positioning Foot Locker for profitable growth.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matthew Barnes to our outstanding Foot Locker management team as we bring the business back to where it belongs at the top of our industry and position it for its next phase of global growth.”
