Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for May by consumer group Which?, with the grocer beating rivals despite loyalty card discounts.
The latest monthly comparison found a basket of 95 grocery items cost £168.30 at the discounter, compared with £198.79 at Sainsbury’s with Nectar prices applied and £196.88 at Tesco including Clubcard discounts.
Lidl was Aldi’s closest competitor, with the same basket priced at £170.58 when loyalty discounts were included.
According to Aldi, shoppers switching from Sainsbury’s to the discounter could save £30.49 on a comparable weekly shop. Over the course of a year, that would equate to savings of more than £1,500.
The retailer said the findings reinforce its value credentials after recently being named Which?’s Best Value Brand of the Year.
“Being named the UK’s cheapest supermarket once again by Which? is fantastic recognition of our unwavering commitment to offering customers the very best value,” said Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield.
“At Aldi, we know how important it is for shoppers to make their money go further, especially as we head into the summer months. Our low prices mean shoppers can enjoy great quality food without overspending.”
