Exchange for Change has launched a monthly survey to track how retailers are preparing for the UK Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), ahead of its planned launch in October 2027.

The organisation’s anonymous Retailer Readiness Survey will examine how prepared retailers feel, what steps they have taken and where they need further information or support.

Exchange for Change said the findings will be monitored each month to help shape its communications, guidance and support for retailers as preparations for the scheme progress.

“The Retailer Readiness Survey aims to connect Exchange For Change directly with store owners and managers, so we can hear first-hand how they are preparing for the introduction of the DRS, and understand what more we can do to help them get their stores and staff ready for the launch,” said Exchange for Change chief executive Russell Davies.

“Retailers will play a fundamental role in the success of the DRS, which is why it is important for us to gather as much input and feedback as we can to help prepare them for the roll out of the scheme.

“Our teams will be closely monitoring the results of the Retailer Readiness Survey each month, and we hope to receive the views and insights from a wide variety of retailers from all corners of the UK.”

The survey forms part of the organisation’s wider retail engagement programme. In June, Exchange for Change announced £60m in grant funding to help small independent retailers with the cost of installing Reverse Vending Machines, alongside expanded exemption criteria for return points.

It also confirmed a tiered Return Handling Fee, which will be paid to retailers handling deposits through manual and automated return points.

The DRS will cover PET plastic, steel and aluminium drinks containers between 150ml and 3 litres, with glass also included in Wales.
