The government has widened its fishery support grant to include new engines and gearboxes as part of its Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS).

The scheme, administered by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is intended to help fishing vessels modernise and reduce engine emissions.

Now, small-scale coastal fleet vessels can receive a 65 per cent contribution towards new petrol or diesel engines, while other vessels can receive 50 per cent. Electric and hybrid engines are eligible for a 90 per cent contribution regardless of vessel or business size.

The rates follow previous engine support under the UK Seafood Fund, aimed at encouraging lower-carbon technology for fishing businesses.

The scheme is funded from the £132 million committed to the Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund over the next five years and has already approved more than £5 million of investment

“This is a great opportunity for operators of all sizes to invest in their vessels, and I’d encourage anyone considering an engine upgrade to look at the expanded scheme and make the most of the support that is available,” said MMO acting director of finance Paul Errington.

“Whether you’re looking at a new diesel engine or making the switch to electric or hybrid, we can make a meaningful contribution to help you with that transition.”
