London Mayor Sadiq Khan has kicked off the process to proceed with his plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street and rejuvenate the city’s busiest shopping district.
Khan launched a consultation today (28 February) to gather Londoners’ views on his proposals to ban traffic along the street, which is estimated to have contributed £25bn to the capital’s economy in 2022.
Khan had proposed a pedestrianised traffic-free Oxford Street during the 2016 mayoral election, but Westminster City Council withdrew support in 2018 due to a lack of public support. He revived the proposal in September.

Khan said: “Oxford Street has been known as the nation’s high street but the area has suffered in recent years.
“My proposals are designed to unlock the true potential of Oxford Street and deliver a world-class, accessible, clean, avenue.
“These proposals would help to restore this famous part of the capital and support good businesses, while creating new jobs and boosting growth.”
New West End Company chief executive Dee Corsi said the public consultation marks a “significant milestone” in the evolution of busy shopping street.
“We have long championed the regeneration of Oxford Street, recognising its vital importance to London and the UK economy.”
The consultation closes on 2 May.
