Boden records profits & sales uptick

Fashion retailer Boden has recorded an uptick in profits and sales, driven by strong womenswear sales and an increase in customers.

The company, which was founded as a catalogue retailer before expanding to bricks-and-mortar and online retail, said its pre-tax profit for the year ending December 31 went up by 9.6 per cent to £26.2 million.

Sales also went up by nine per cent to £308 million, thanks to double digit growth in womenswear and 10 per cent growth in customer numbers.

While Boden’s first  shop in Hangar Green, north west London, was been revamped to offer more products and services, the retailer also partnered with John Lewis to open five concessions.

It has also started to sell its items via Next Label, Zalando and La Redoute, and it is preparing to open a brand new flagship store on King’s Road, Chelsea in London in autumn.

Boden is also in the process of investing in a new warehouse and call centre in Leicester and redeveloping its head office.

“The investment in the business and brand is delivering results and we were very pleased with our performance in 2016,” said chief executive Jill Easterbrook, a former Tesco executive who started at Boden earlier this year.

“Boden appeals to a loyal customer with strong product, excellent customer experience and a powerful global brand. We are building on this with further investment.

“There is significant opportunity as we focus on new customers, new distribution channels and new markets. We have ambitious plans based on solid foundations as we continue to develop Boden as an international multi-channel brand.”
