Ebay has reported 36,000 new businesses joining its platform in 2018, making it the largest rise since 2015.

Small businesses are opting for flexibility and freedom, as well as independence and empowerment, according to Ebay’s Small Business Barometer.

Ebay also found that 43 per cent of small retailers are keeping positive on their growth prospects for this year, while 62 per cent aim to increase investments.

Meanwhile, 22 per cent of small businesses forecast that online sales will drive their growth this year.

Ebay’s Retail Revival programme in Wolverhampton announced a partnership with the city council to support local bricks-and-mortar retailers and online players to make the most of digital retail.

In January, ahead of the programmes launch, 64 participating businesses saw revenues jump by 41 per cent, reaching £1 million in sales.

“Britain’s small business scene is booming, fuelled by a desire for greater flexibility, independence and empowerment,” Ebay UK vice president Rob Hattrell.

“I see plenty of entrepreneurs on Ebay, like The Print House, moving quickly to capitalise on opportunities that larger firms often struggle to see.”
