Fashion and footwear purchases have increased in the last year as digital platforms drive sales for retailers, according to a new survey.

New research from the Royal Mail, which surveyed 502 online shoppers in the UK, found that t-shirts and tops were the most commonly purchased fashion items, with 46 per cent buying them online.

Meanwhile, trainers are the most common under the footwear category, making up 72 per cent of footwear sales.

Royal Mail also found that Brits spent an average of £28 online compared to £27 spent in-store per month.

An average £27 is spent online for footwear, compared to £22 spent in-store per month.

The research found that price, choice and convenience are the top reasons Brits shop online.

Social media has also inevitably driven sales, with 49 per cent of respondents saying it influences their purchasing decisions.

Moreover, denim has proved popular in online sales with 30 per cent of shoppers planning on purchasing a pair of jeans in the next year.

Finally, a total of 48 per cent were influenced by discounts and offers when making purchases, 42 per cent followed friends’ recommendations, and 41 per cent from advertisements.
