Discount retailer Poundland has today announced that its total carrier bag sales of £32,804.01 will be donated to charity.

Cancer Research Wales is the chosen recipient to benefit from the large donation as staff at Poundland felt that the money should be put back into the local community by funding research of the disease.

Current legislation in Wales requires retailers to charge five pence for every carrier bag sold, spurring on 19 of the discount retailer‘s stores across the country to take part in the scheme which ran from October 1st 2011 to April 1st 2012.

Jim McCarthy, CEO at Poundland commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to give this money to such a worthy charity.

“The donation means a lot to our colleagues and customers and we are proud to demonstrate our support to local people affected by cancer.”

These proceeds form part of the continued support Poundland gives to the Macmillan Cancer charity.

Retail Director Tim McDonnell handed over the cheque to Cancer Research Wales yesterday at the Cardiff store to Director of the Charity Liz Andrews and Fundraising Manager Laura Hooper.

Andrews said the money will go towards new research being conducted by the charity

“We are absolutely delighted to receive such a wonderful donation from Poundland and we would like to extend our thanks to the Poundland colleagues who selected Cancer Research Wales as their chosen charity,” she said.

“All the money raised will stay in Wales to fund exciting new research which will make a huge difference to the fight against cancer.”

Yesterday, pressure group the British Retail Consortium announced the launch of sister body the Welsh Retail Consortium, aimed at highlighting issues affecting the Welsh retail sector.
