Pure play e-tailer Amazon has launched a new local deals website in London aimed at offering consumers discounts on a range of products and events, it has been announced today.

Offering discounts on restaurants, spas and events, the new site, Amazon Local, went live this morning offering users across London their first deal via email this morning.

Existing Amazon customers can use existing login details to access the site and offers are tailored to their preferences, while Amazon‘s Mastercard customers are able to accumulate loyalty points which are converted to gift certificates to purchase regional deals on the original Amazon website.

Additionally, cardholders will be rewarded with two loyalty points for every £1 spent on AmazonLocal.co.uk.

Launched initially in the US last year, Amazon Local will face stiff competition from the likes of Groupon, the daily deals site that recently published disappointing results.

Discount schemes are proving wildly popular during the ongoing economic gloom and it is hoped that this latest initiative will encourage shoppers to spend with a brand they know and trust, as earlier today data revealed that a quarter of consumers would bank with Amazon should the online retailer venture into offering such a service.

Gordon Willoughby, Amazon Local Director at Amazon EU, explained: “Our aim is to be the place where customers can come to find anything that they want buy online, so offering great deals from local businesses like restaurants, spas and theatres is a logical addition to the tens of millions of products that can already be found at Amazon.

“This is day one for AmazonLocal.co.uk and we will focus our efforts on providing a first rate customer experience for Londoners.”
