High street retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) is to create 20,000 jobs this Christmas across the UK & Republic of Ireland as it continues its festive recruitment drive, it has been announced today.

Successful candidates will be based in over 500 stores and will participate in a two-day induction training session ahead of their first day.

Roles available include customer assistants, M&S Cafe assistants and store operations roles and those chosen will receive a 20 per cent discount on M&S products as well as a rewards package.

At the end of last month, the retailer announced that it was recruiting for 1,000 staff at its e-commerce distribution centre in Castle Donington, employing people with disabilities and health conditions in part-time work for three months with the possibility of extending some contracts should there be availability.

Last year, more than 20 per cent of the 15,000 Christmas recruits were taken on full-time after their seasonal contracts came to an end and M&S is employing an additional 5,000 festive staff this year .

Last year, staff helped over 35 million visitors to the stores in the week prior to Christmas and this year all applicants, who must be able to work nights, weekends and Bank Holidays over Christmas, can find full role descriptions and details of the application process on the M&S website.

Commenting on the upcoming recruitment drive, Steve Rowe, Director of Retail at M&S, said: “Customers turn to M&S for the most important occasions, trusting us to deliver delicious Christmas lunch, latest fashions and fantastic customer service.

“We want to make sure that our customer needs are met so we‘re putting the call out for 20,000 passionate, service-centred recruits to come join the team and help make it a merry Christmas for millions of M&S shoppers.”
