Variety retailer WHSmith is clawing back its share of the entertainment sector following the collapse of HMV by re-establishing its CD and DVD ranges in a number of stores which had axed the category, it has been reported.

As high street demand for entertainment goods dwindled amid growing competition from pure-play e-tailers, WHSmith significantly reduced its offering under the direction of CEO Kate Swann, who has worked hard to reposition the retailer during her tenure.

However, blockbuster Skyfall is now available in selected stores along with a number of other chart CDs and DVDs according to The Telegraph, as WHSmith looks to capitalise on the gap left on the high street by the 107 HMV stores closed since the start of the year.

While WHSmith made no comment on the news, one source told the newspaper that the retailer is seeking to “go where the profits are.”
