Credit card giant American Express is aiming to give small retailers a boost next month on Small Business Saturday.

‘Small Business Saturday‘, which originally launched in the States three years ago, is designed to encourage people to shop at small merchants. American Express is supporting the initiative in the UK by incentivising its Cardmembers to shop in small merchants that accept AmEx by offering £5 back when they spend £10 or more.

Mark Roper, Head of Merchant Services UK at American Express said the firm has a strong tradition of working with small businesses.

“We recognise they (small businesses) make a huge contribution to our economy. We‘re delighted that Small Business Saturday is coming to the UK.”

Sian Foster, Founder of Ella Georgia, an independent, sustainable jewellery and fashion boutique in North Yorkshire, says she‘s looking forward to promoting her business on the Day: “It‘s fantastic that American Express is promoting Small Business Saturday and encouraging its Cardmembers to visit and spend with small businesses on 7th December. The extra publicity and footfall this will bring to a small, independent business like mine is invaluable.”

The AmEx ad promotion campaign launches on November 11th.
