Last Christmas saw the adult colouring craze sweep the nation, boosting sales at WH Smith‘s to heights not seen for over a decade.

However, even the most colourful trends are fickle and sales of the books have now slumped by up to 70 per cent.

Luckily, a new craze has taken its place in the form of Ladybird Books for Adults; a comic revamp of the much-loved classic Lady Bird and Famous Five books.

Strong sales of these books have helped WHSmith post a one per cent rise in sales over the 21 weeks to January 21, amid a tough retail market.

Some of the most popular titles include The Ladybird Book of The Midlife CrisisThe Ladybird Book of the Zombie Apocalypse and How it Works – The Wife.

JA Hazeley and JP Morris, the illustrious comedy writers known for Charlie Brooker’s Wipe series and That Mitchell and Webb Look, spearheaded these satirical favourites.

They have sold more than 17 million copies since they were launched in late 2015, and dominated many spots in the top 10 bestselling hardbacks last year.
