Tesco has announced plans to axe its 24 hour shopping service in eight Tesco Extra stores, placing 3000 jobs in jeopardy.

The eight stores affected – Galashiels, Holyhead, Ilkeston, Kilmarnock, Falkirk Grahams Road, Folkestone, Worksop and Edgware Road Metro – will now open at 6am and close at midnight.

Other changes to be implemented include moving from night-to-day replenishment in 69 stores.

Tesco said it was also merging different service desks so customers can get everything they need in one place.

As a result of the changes, 3000 roles have been placed under consultation.

“We’re committed to improving the way we serve our customers and this week have discussed making further changes in a number of UK stores with our colleagues,” Tesco UK chief executive Matt Davies said.

“These changes will help us run these stores more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers.

“We appreciate these changes will impact the roles of some of our colleagues and we will work with them to ensure they are fully supported throughout this period.”
