The head of Tesco’s Asian operations Tony Hoggett is returning to the UK to take on in the newly-created position as the retailer’s group chief operations officer.
Hoggett was the former chief operating officer for Tesco’s UK operations before being appointed the chief executive of Tesco Asia in March last year.
According to The Grocer, in his new role back home he will work beneath Tesco’s new UK chief executive Charles Wilson and part of his remit is to improve the Big 4 retailer’s store performance in light of its recent merger with wholesaler Booker.

The position left vacant by Hoggett at Tesco Asia will be taken over by chief people officer Alison Horner.
Meanwhile, Tesco UK people officer Natasha Adams has been promoted to replace Horner as chief people officer.
Hoggett, Horner and Adams will all commence their new roles on June 1.
Hoggett first Tesco as a 19-year-old in 1990 and worked his way up to store manager before taking on various executive roles in the company.
His career highlights includes leading Tesco’s South China operations, joining Tesco’s Turkish board as chief operating officer, and being the UK retail director for two years before he was promoted to chief operating officer in 2016.
Hoggett is credited for leading a major restructure of Tesco, including a shift away from 24-hour operations and overhauling in-store management roles.
In a note to colleagues, Tesco’s group chief executive Dave Lewis said Hoggett had unique experience to bring to the new group chief operations role, and that he would retain responsibility for joint ventures in India and China.
“This role will, like the chief product officer and chief customer officer roles, deliver for Charles and the UK business on a day-to-day basis, while also leveraging operational capability and and strategy across the group,” Lewis said.
