The Cotswold Company appoints outgoing HMV CEO Ian Topping as chairman

HMV chief executive Ian Topping has been appointed to chairman of The Cotswold Company alongside current owners True.

The Cotswold Company announced this week that the outgoing HMV chief executive would work with the online furniture retailer, bringing within him over 25 years of retail leadership experience.

Having spent five years in the top role at HMV, Topping has also worked as chief executive of Steinhoff UK, following its acquisition of Relyon Group PLC in 2001, where he was Chief Executive until 2012.

Topping announced his departure from HMV back in April, when he revealed he would be pursuing “a variety of part-time challenges” after re-establishing profitability at the music and entertainment retailer and delivering strong investor returns since it was acquired from administration by Hilco Capital.

“The Cotswold Company has experienced a strong period of growth since it was acquired by True in 2016, expanding its product and category ranges and showroom footprint,” said Topping.

“I look forward to working closely with Kevin and the rest of the management team to continue to grow the brand and build on the industry leading customer proposition to attract an even wider customer base,’ he added.

“Ian brings over 25 years of retail leadership experience to the board and we look forward to him contributing to the future success of the business,” said The Cotswold Company chief executive Kevin Johnson.
