Hammerson unveils City Quarters concept next to Leeds’ Victoria Gate

// Victoria Gate in Leeds will soon have an adjacent hotel as part of Hammerson’s City Quarter concept
// Victoria Gate Hotel will be 14 storeys with 205 beds, a gym, conferencing facilities, and a bar & restaurant
// City Quarters scheme will see Hammerson venues transformed into mixed-use neighbourhoods

Hammerson has chosen Leeds as the next location for its new City Quarter concept, with plans for a 14-storey hotel adjacent to Victoria Gate.

The property giant, which owns and manages the Victoria Gate shopping precinct in Leeds’ city centre, said the 205-bed hotel development would sit adjacent to Victoria Gate and see the regeneration of the land between the existing multi-storey car park and St Peter’s Street.

The Victoria Gate Hotel is one of the first schemes introduced as part of Hammerson’s new City Quarters concept, which aims to create vibrant mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding existing flagship destinations around the UK.

The City Quarters scheme will effectively see Hammerson transform many of its city venues beyond pure retail into neighbourhoods providing homes, workspace, hotel space and accessible public realms.

Hammerson made recent submissions of mixed-use masterplan applications for both Martineau Galleries in Birmingham and the Goodsyard in Shoreditch.

Designed by architecture firm Acme, who delivered Victoria Gate, the façade of the proposed hotel takes inspiration from the surrounding architecture and Leeds’ rich merchandising and textile history.

The hotel will feature an on-site gym, conferencing facilities, and a bar and restaurant on the ground floor open to both guests and the public.

Hammerson’s Victoria Gate development in Leeds opened in 2016.

Hammerson said the construction would support up to approximately 980 construction jobs over the life of the project while the hotel will create 50 full-time jobs once open.

The proposed hotel also marks the next step in the continued regeneration of this part Leeds’ city centre, following the development of Victoria Gate which opened in 2016.

Hammerson also owns a 10 acre site just north of Victoria Gate which will be brought forward for development in due course, creating a new mixed-use City Quarters neighbourhood.

“We are pleased to be able to share plans for a new hotel within the Victoria Estate as we continue the roll out of our City Quarters concept in thriving locations around the UK and Ireland,” Hammerson UK development director Robin Dobson said.

“Hammerson has a strong track record of delivery in Leeds city centre and these plans for a new, contemporary hotel represent the next step in our wider regeneration plans, creating a mixed-use destination where people can live, work and relax, centred around our premium flagship destination, Victoria Leeds.”
