Asda is set to appoint 150 specialist greengrocers in stores across the UK as part of a £9 million investment in its fresh fruit and vegetables offering.

The supermarket expects the new roles to be filled by both existing staff and new hires.

The greengrocers will oversee quality standards from the shop floor and check product availability, presentation of the produce area, and will also be on hand to support customers as and when required.

Each new greengrocer will receive specialist training in all aspects of Asda’s fresh produce operation.

Mike Snell, managing director of Asda’s fresh produce division IPL managing director Mike Snell said “The fresh produce section is one of the most popular locations in our stores and more than half of our best-selling lines by volume are generated from this area. We know how proud our colleagues are about product quality and store standards and we are making this investment to enhance the experience our customers receive when shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables.”

The supermarket will be investing in giving its shoppers a wider choice of premium fruit and vegetables from its ‘Extra Special’ tier.

Other initiatives also include introducing new fixtures and fittings to improve the presentation and layout of fresh produce sections within stores.
