John Lewis chair Sharon White has had to take the decision since joining the company two years ago.
“We are in the most competitive retail market ever,” she said.
“Being a partnership does not insulate us from having to take the tough decisions.”
Since her role, White has shuttered 16 shops, cut a further 1000 jobs in stores, and launched a value range.
John Lewis and Waitrose are expected to post profits of at least £100 million next week when the group reveals its annual performance.

Not sure if it’s a secret.. the Price guarantee that John Lewis had was always a strange one , they only stocked major brands that supplied them exclusive to JLP such as Washing machines etc so when you did a price match check in store the model number would always come back as the JL price thus convincing the customer that it was the best price so hence why such low customers would have raised this…..
I purchased a TV from John Lewis at there store in Edinburgh last Tuesday and will be delivered tomorrow 1st of August. Two day’s after the purchase, I found out that the TV price had been dropped by £60. I have tried to fined some where that will send me a Price match claim form. John Lewis on line say that as I bought the TV in the store I should contact them. When I contacted the store, they told me to go on line but there are no such thing on line, all there is just news on John Lewis closing the service on match prices on the 22nd of August. Three day’s I have been searching!
“We only received 19 calls” I suspect most people did what we’ve done this week when buying baby items and made the statement by buying the pram, cot etc elsewhere. Basically people will just go elsewhere with their hard earned cash.
