Supermarket bosses to meet Sunak over soaring food prices

Prime minister Rishi Sunak is set to hold crisis talks with supermarket bosses and farmers later this month following calls for the government to address the inflationary impacts of food production.

The Grocer reported the discussions are likely to explore the balance of power between growers and the big grocery retailers as well as cover the demands by the National Farmers Union for more support to help boost home-grown production.

The talks are due to take place in Westminster on 16 May.

The date is understood to have been brought forward following climbing food inflation which reached 19.1% in March, the sharpest increase in 45 years.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey accused UK supermarkets of profiteering from soaring food prices earlier this week .

He called on the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate whether the grocers could be using its market power to inflate and raise food prices even further.
