‘Period pants tax’ to be scrapped in Autumn Statement

Tax on period pants is set to be scrapped in the Autumn Statement on Wednesday.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is expected to announce that the specialist underwear will no longer be subject to VAT from January, BBC News reported.

It will join other sanitary products such as pads and tampons, which have been exempt from the 20% levy since 2021.

The expected announcement comes as Hunt has faced increasing pressure from retailers and women’s group in reclassifying specialist underwear, which are more absorbent and thicker than typical knickers.

The ‘Say Pants to the Tax’ campaign, led by M&S and Wuka, has received the backing from more than 36,000 consumers.

The two brands were among 50 signatories of an open letter addressed to the Treasury in August asking for the 20% levy to be abolished.

M&S was joined by Sainsbury’s, Tesco, John Lewis and Mountain Warehouse in covering the cost of VAT on its range of period underwear.
