Wilko is set to open cafés in more of its stores as the discount chain continues to add new features to improve the shopper experience.

The value retailer has been testing the Café Eighty Nine concept in its Exeter branch, which opened 1 December last year.

The café is named after the year new Wilko owner CDS Superstores opened its first The Range store and sells a mixture of hot and cold food alongside Barista-made drinks.

Wilko said: “As part of our return to high streets and retail parks across the UK, we’re looking to enhance our in-store experience to better meet our customers’ needs.

“For Exeter we’ve introduced Café Eighty Nine and have plans to introduce in other locations.

“Our cafés serve a variety of hot and cold food and drink to help customers rest or refuel while shopping for their home and garden in-store.”

It comes as Wilko is in the process of expanding its in-store food offer. The retailer is currently trialling frozen foods in its stores for the first time under CDS’ partnership with Iceland.

CDS Superstores chief executive Alex Simpkin told Retail Gazette last month: “For our Wilko roll-out we’ve been keen to trial lots of new additions to enhance the shopper experience.”
