JD Sports is set to cut nearly 200 jobs following its decision to close its distribution centre in Derby.

Staff at Derby Commercial Park were informed of the job losses on Friday, after a six-week consultation period, the BBC reported.

The sportswear retailer had signed a 20-year lease on the 514,000 sq ft facility just three years ago.

A JD Sports spokesperson told the publication: “We have made the difficult decision to close our Derby distribution centre and are working with all those affected to ensure they are fully supported through this challenging period.”

The decision to close the warehouse follows a strategic review of JD Sports’ global supply chain network, which evaluated all available options.

Efforts are now underway to find alternative roles within the company for those affected.

Last month, the sports fashion retailer saw its like-for-likes edge up 2.4% in its second quarter however it flagged its cautious outlook for the rest of the year as the global macro environment remains “volatile”.
