Aldi has overtaken Asda for the first time to become Scotland’s second biggest supermarket by volume, according to new data from Kantar.

The German discounter’s volume share of the grocery market in the country rose 11.7% in the 12 weeks to 15 June, taking a higher share than Co-op (8.9%), Sainsbury’s (7.4%), Lidl (9.6%), Morrisons (8.9%) and Asda (11.5%), putting it only behind Tesco (25.2%).

Aldi attributed its growth in the region to its commitment to Scottish sourcing and the growing popularity of customers shopping locally.

Aldi Scotland regional managing director Sandy Mitchell said: “Reaching this milestone is a proud moment for Aldi in Scotland, reflecting the strength of our continued growth.

“This data reveals the trust customers are placing in us every day, turning to us for top quality products at affordable prices.”

It comes as Aldi continues to ramp up its expansion, with the grocer announcing that it would be creating 1,000 new UK store roles this year as part of its opening programme.

The supermarket also recently unveiled an updated list of priority locations across the UK where it was actively seeking new store sites, following a nationwide call-out for suggestions from the public.
