Aldi has bumped its pay for staff for the second time in two months, as it reinforces its pledge to never be beaten on pay.
More than 28,000 of the supermarket’s hourly paid store workers across the UK will receive a bigger than expected pay rise from 1 September.
In July, Aldi said it would be boosting its store assistant salaries from £12.75 an hour to £13.00 from 1 September, to become the first grocer to offer this minimum rate.
However, the German discounter has now made a further increase to £13.02 an hour, with the rate increasing to £13.95 with length of service.
The new rates are rising from £14.05 an hour to £14.35 in London, increasing to £14.66 with length of service.
The move marks the second pay rise for Aldi store colleagues this year. The retailer unveiled a pay rise in March, which saw store staff paid a minimum of £12.75 an hour nationwide, and £14.05 an hour within the M25.
Aldi UK and Ireland CEO Giles Hurley said: “Our colleagues are at the heart of our success, and we’re committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded for the outstanding work they do.
“This higher than planned pay rise is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay.”
