Waitrose is set to open its first distribution centre in the South West, creating more than 550 jobs as part of a wider overhaul of its supply chain.
The 360,000 sq ft site in Avonmouth, Bristol, will open in early 2027 and be operated by DHL, serving around 50 existing Waitrose shops in the region, while recruiting around 480 warehouse staff and 80 drivers.
The new site forms part of a multi-year £1bn investment programme across the Waitrose brand, which includes upgrading all 317 stores and strengthening availability through improved logistics and technology.
The grocery retailer said it is investing in AI-driven demand forecasting and automation to build on its product availability, while also reducing manual processes for colleagues.
It is understood the Avonmouth facility has been designed as Waitrose’s most sustainable distribution centre to date, with a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating and featuring 1,200 solar panels, energy-efficient systems and landscaped outdoor spaces.
Waitrose estimates the site will cut annual supply chain emissions by 2,225 tonnes of CO₂, helped by access to a nearby biomethane refuelling station.
The new launch follows Waitrose’s opening of a new convenience store at The Arches in Bristol and plans for a full-line supermarket at the city’s Brabazon development.
“As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us,” said Waitrose’s Supply Chain Director Alison Maffin. “This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility.
“DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion.”
DHL Supply Chain CEO Martin Willmor said: “We are excited to be working with Waitrose as they expand their regional presence while reducing supply chain emissions.
“The new Bristol site reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, whilst supporting the community.”
