Decathlon has rolled out a new multi-site automation programme, covering seven logistics centres across Europe as the retailer looks to standardise and scale its supply chain operations.

The initiative, known as Skyfleet and created by warehouse logistics solutions Exotec, spans sites in France, the UK, Portugal, Italy and Germany, and builds on an existing partnership between the two companies that began with the deployment of robotic systems in 2021.

It is understood the programme is designed to create a consistent logistics model across markets, combining robotics, software and automated equipment to make both inbound and outbound warehouse processes more efficient.

Each site operates with fleets of up to 200 robots and is capable of processing up to 200,000 items per day, with automation covering picking, storage and order preparation.

Exotec said the move marks a step forward in its role as an end-to-end integrator, with its proprietary warehouse execution system coordinating operations across all sites through a single software platform.

Alongside efficiency gains, the rollout has also improved working conditions for warehouse staff. At Decathlon’s Northampton site, daily walking distances for pickers have reduced significantly, while workplace incidents linked to order preparation have also fallen.

Decathlon head of logistics automation Jérôme Saillour said the retailer selected Exotec for its ability to deploy scalable systems across multiple locations.

“We were looking for a partner to support our logistics network rationalisation project. We chose Exotec because they were able to deploy multiple sites in a short time and integrate scalable solutions that evolve with our needs.”

“In five years, we have profoundly transformed the workplace experience within our warehouses and written the next chapter of logistics at Decathlon.”
