Convenience retailers witnessed record revenues throughout the May and June heatwaves, according to new data from convenience insight agency Talysis.
The industry’s sales saw a £30 million boost during May, followed by a further uplift in June driven by the hot weather.
The sector’s soft drinks category hit two all-time highs during the space of four weeks. Sales initially hit £105 million throughout the Bank Holiday week ending 31 May, before reaching £114 million in the week ending 27 June.
The revenue boost spanned across all of the industry’s main subcategories of soft drinks, such as water, carbonates, energy, juice and smoothies.
Additionally, the ice cream category broke its value sales record twice. The category hit £14.8 million in the week ending 31 May, and reached £18.2 million last week, rising 56 per cent compared to the same week last year.
Talysis managing director Ed Roberts said: “The great British summer this year presents a major and much-needed opportunity for the UK’s independent convenience sector.
“As our insights have shown, hotter weather, either a heatwave or simply ‘above average’ temperatures, delivers significant sales increases in the channel. Coupled with the World Cup, Wimbledon and other high-profile sporting events, it’s exactly what the sector needs.”
He continued: “Although the latest heatwave is now over, there’s another one predicted soon. Retailers need to grab every opportunity they can to demonstrate their convenience now, so that shoppers remember them during the tougher months.
“Stock up on the key categories to maximise availability, make sure relevant SKUs are chilled, and communicate effectively to your customers and potential customers”
