The Range owner CDS Superstores has emerged as a potential buyer of parts of Poundland as the struggling discount chain’s sale process nears its conclusion.

Billionaire retail tycoon Chris Dawson, whose business also owns Wilko and Homebase, is understood to be interested in acquiring a selection of Poundland stores, according to The Times.

His interest adds another bidder to the process being overseen by restructuring advisers Alvarez & Marsal, as owner Gordon Brothers races to secure a deal ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.

Irish property investor Martin Property Group remains a leading contender, backing a proposed management buyout involving Poundland managing director Barry Williams and former Asda boss Andy Bond.

The group is understood to be pursuing a solvent takeover that would preserve the Poundland brand and protect its remaining store estate and workforce.

Other interested parties include Poundstretcher owner Fortress Investment Group and Modella Capital, which owns Hobbycraft and TGJones.

Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have also reportedly expressed interest in acquiring individual Poundland stores as they look to expand their UK estates.

Dawson’s interest comes after CDS Superstores expanded its retail portfolio through the acquisition of the Wilko brand in 2023 and a number of former Homebase stores following the DIY retailer’s collapse in 2024.

Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group for £1 in June 2025 and has since overseen a major restructuring programme, which included the closure of more than 100 stores.

However, uncertainty surrounding the retailer’s future has intensified in recent weeks, with retail union Usdaw warning that Poundland could be pushed into administration if a rescue deal cannot be agreed.

The potential collapse would put thousands of jobs at risk, with the discounter employing around 12,000 staff across its remaining estate of approximately 600 stores.

Gordon Brothers is understood to be seeking a resolution to the sale process this week, although it could retain ownership if a suitable deal is not secured.
