Landsec has unveiled a giant recreation of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers at Westgate Oxford shopping centre, as it continues its “commitment to bring arts and culture to the local communities served by its retail destinations”.
Created in collaboration with the National Gallery and Global Street Art, the mural marks the first “murals remastered” installation outside London.
It forms the latest example of the real estate firm’s strategy of “making arts and culture more accessible through locally relevant experiences”.
The installation, which was chosen to reflect Oxford’s botanical heritage as home to the UK’s oldest botanic garden, is being supported by a week of activity across Westgate Oxford.
This will involve retailers and hospitality operators such as The Lego Store, Freddie’s Flowers and roof terrace bar Victors taking part.
Landsec group head of consumer Ben Padley said: “The best retail destinations offer something more than shopping alone.
“By making art and culture more accessible and creating experiences with strong local connections, we can give people new and compelling reasons to visit.”
He added: “The strongest experiences feel true to their setting.
“Whether celebrating local icons or recreating some of the world’s most recognisable artworks, each experience we deliver is rooted in the character of the destination – enriching the day out for visitors and creating more opportunities for the brands that partner with us.”
