Which? has named Asda the cheapest UK supermarket among the major grocers of 2016.

Research from the consumer group found that a basket of 80 popular branded items costs an average of £154.14, £6 cheaper than its nearest rival Morrisons.

Waitrose was the most expensive on the list, with an average basket costing £172.27, followed by Ocado at £170.35 and Tesco at £164.37.

Lidl and Aldi were not included as they don‘t sell enough branded items to make comparisons.

This comes amid a tough time for Asda which is struggling to shake of financial woes and win back customers from its rivals, posting a 4.7 loss of market share in the 12 weeks to December 4.

“With increasing concern over rising food prices, our research shows that some supermarkets are consistently cheaper than others for popular branded items,” Which? magazine editor Richard Headland said.

“It could be worth switching supermarkets, or shopping around, if you want to trim your shopping bill.”
