Sports products & clothing retailer Sports Direct has launched a sports news website offering breaking news and exclusive content, it has been announced today.

Following a £1 million joint venture between Sports Direct and My London News, the website is now live and will feature “star columnists” and major sports news, a statement from the retailer said.

Such a move seeks to engage customers more closely with the brand and make the site an asset to the company both domestically and internationally as it breaks exclusive sports stories across football, rugby, cricket, golf, horse racing, athletics and cycling.

Strengthening its online presence is a key part of the retailer‘s strategy as it announced last month that online sales within its Sports division now account for around 15 per cent of total Sports Retail sales.

Managing Director of SportsDirect News Oskar Thorvaldsson welcomed the news, noting that the site published an average of 60 articles weekly during its soft launch period.

“This project has a very realistic chance of having a big impact on the fortunes of Sports Direct,” Thorvaldsson said.

“We‘ve recruited an exciting team of experienced and hungry young sports journalists who have proved the concept works.

“We will be beefing up the content as we progress and readers can expect star names to giving us exclusive insights across a range of sports.”
