High street retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) is set to unveil its Christmas advertising campaign later this week featuring popular songs alongside its clothing range, it has been announced today.

Under the strapline ‘The Greatest Hits this Christmas‘, the campaign mimics Christmas compilation albums and will feature five tracks including ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas‘, a cover by Rod Stewart which has never been released.

Airing on Wednesday November 7th 2012 during Coronation Street, the ad seeks to represent women of all sizes and ages following criticism of its recent ‘Real Women‘ campaign .

Steve Sharp, Executive Director of Marketing at M&S, explained that the aim of the campaign is to inspire shoppers to try the latest seasonal trends.

He said: “Customers have been the driving force behind this campaign and we‘ve been in constant dialogue to give them more of what they want to see from M&S: more products, more diversity and an injection of style and fun.”

Shot in a similar style to its Autumn/Winter campaign, the ad contains five product scenes with individual tracks including Jean Knight‘s Mr Big Stuff, INXS‘ ‘I Need You Tonight‘ and Kool & The Gang‘s ‘Celebration‘.

Created by ad agency RKCR/Y&R, the ad will be available to preview online ahead of the official launch via the retailer‘s website from Wednesday morning.

Sharp concluded: “. Music is a really emotive part of Christmas and our compilation track format means there‘s something for everyone – from song choices to wearable styles.”
