Asda lays bare disastrous 2016 with pre-tax profits crashing 19%

Asda suffered a slump in both sales and profits in 2016, as the details of its full year results filed at Companies House reveal it was the weakest of the Big 4 in the UK’s supermarket wars.

The grocery giant recorded a sales drop 3.2 per cent to £21.7 billion in its full-year period ending December 31, while pre-tax profits slumped by almost 19 per cent to £791.7 million.

Like-for-like sales also took a battering at the Walmart-owned retailer, dropping by 5.7 per cent.

“The grocery market has continued to experience low growth throughout the year and competition in the sector has remained intense,” Asda said.

“Our sales performance, relative to the market, was behind our expectations.”

The grocery chain said that despite the disappointing results of 2016, the turnaround efforts under recently-appointed chief executive Sean Clarke are starting to crystallise.

The company highlighted how the final quarter indicated that improvements in ranges and slashing prices in everyday items were paying off.

In addition, although it posted an 11th consecutive quarter of falling figures in the first quarter of this year, the 2.8 per cent decline recorded was a  marginal improvement on the last quarter, where it dropped by 2.9 per cent — and a dramatic improvement on the 7.5 per cent decline recorded in August last year.

Asda’s share of the market also fell 0.9 per cent to 15.7 per cent last year, according to Kantar Worldpanel.
