Only 4 British retailers make Glassdoor’s top 50 places to work

Glassdoor has revealed its 10th annual Employees Choice Awards, laying bare the best places to work in the UK in 2018 and listing just four retailers in the top 50.

No British retailers managed to secure a spot in the top 10 this year, with Screwfix dropping from ninth to number 12th.

Harrods was the next retailer to make the list, rising from 29th last year to 23rd, ahead of Waitrose which dropped from 36th to 43rd.

The latter’s department store stablemate John Lewis dropped out of the list this year, having been voted in 33rd place last year.

Meanwhile, footwear retailer Schuh edged into the top 50, coming in at 48th.

Conversely, supermarket giant Sainsbury’s fell from 45th place out of the list this year.

Other notable companies with a retail offering include Apple, which shot up from 41st place to ninth this year.

The list is compiled using anonymous employee reviews of their company, including the best and worst reasons to work there alongside a rating of their chief executive, compensation and benefits, and work-life balance.

“We know today’s job seekers are more informed than ever about where they go to work, researching everything from company culture to career opportunities to pay philosophy and more,” Glassdoor chief executive Robert Hohman said.

“To help people find companies that stand out from the pack, the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards recognise employers that are truly Best Places to Work because they’re determined by those who really know best – the employees.

“Employers where employees love to work continue to prove that they have a recruiting and business performance advantage.”
