WHSmith takes off in Rio with seven new stores

WHSmith will open seven new stores in Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport as it looks to continue its international expansion plans.

The books, magazines and stationery retailer has been steadily strengthening the travel arm of its business to counter the tough trading experienced by its stores on the UK high street.

Now with Rio de Janeiro in sight, WHSmith will team up with Duty Free Americas to launch seven new stores in August, making its debut in South Americas.

Rio Galeão is Brazil’s second largest international airport, handling more than 16 million passengers in 2017.

WHSmith will be setting up stores across international and domestic departures, stocking books, magazines, travel accessories, souvenirs, confectionery and beverages.

“This is a significant win for us as we prepare to open our first stores in South America,” said WHSmith international chairman Louis de Bourgoing.

“We look forward to working with the team at Rio Galeão and to open seven stores in such a prestigious airport with strong development plans and potential for passenger growth. We are also delighted to enter this new territory working in partnership with Duty Free Americas,” he added.
