WH Smith no longer selling Debenhams gift cards

WH Smith has stopped issuing gift cards for Debenhams, raising more concerns over the health of the department store’s business.

According to the BBC, WH Smith is yet to issue a statement explaining its reasons behind the decision, although Debenhams said it was aware its gift cards were no longer available.

“We are aware that WH Smith has temporarily ceased selling Debenhams Gift Cards,” a spokesperson from Debenhams confirmed. “We are in dialogue with WH Smith regarding this decision.”

It comes in the same month Spirts Direct was forced to issue a statement saying it would not try to make a bid on the business after raising its stake to almost 30 per cent, just beneath a mandatory takeover threshold.

Yet more speculation emerged after Sports Direct also denied claims its owner Mike Ashley would block Debenhams’ sale of its Magasin du Nord business.
