Sports Direct to shed 300 jobs amid Wigan warehouse closure

Sports Direct has announced it will close its distribution centre in Wigan, Greater Manchester, resulting in the loss of 300 jobs.

The Mike Ashley-owned retail company is due to close the warehouse on June 13, and employees who are responsible for packing goods for nationwide distribution were notified of the arrangement yesterday, according to The Guardian.

Staff who will be made redundant have reportedly been offered roles at the sport retailer giant’s Shirebrook warehouse.

Meanwhile, the GMB trade union criticised Sports Direct’s decision to close the Wigan warehouse.

In 2016, Sports Direct and Mike Ashley were embroiled in controversy after a Guardian investigation found staff in its Shirebrook warehouse were allegedly forced to work in “Victorian workhouse” conditions.
