Tesco is calling on shoppers to reduce their food waste this Christmas by introducing a dedicated ‘Festive Use Up’ Day.

The supermarket is asking customers to choose a day between 25 and 30 December to use up leftovers that would otherwise be thrown away.

Around 270,000 tons of food is thrown away during the festive season, according to a research by Respect Food.

The supermarket is encouraging customers to ditch the traditional post-Christmas turkey sandwich in favour of more creative meals.

Tesco campaigns director Kené Umeasiegbu: “For many, Christmas is a time where friends and families come together to enjoy delicious food, and we want our customers to be able to get more out of their Christmas food shop, while keeping tasty meals on the table for their loved ones.

“By using up what they already have before going out to shop, people can spend less and reduce food waste, benefitting both our pockets and the planet.”

The move comes after Tesco said it had accelerated its plans to reduce food waste across its own operations by 2025.
