Aldi to launch 5 stores in 5 weeks as expansion continues

// Aldi is set to launch five new supermarkets throughout the UK in the next five weeks
// The move comes under the grocer’s commitment to invest over £400m in store development this year

Aldi is preparing to open five new supermarkets throughout the UK within the next five weeks.

The discount retailer will debut stores this month in areas including Southampton and Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire, with each shop opening creating about 40 new jobs.

Meanwhile, more stores will be launched in Norwich, Castle Donington in Leicestershire and Porthcawl in south Wales in early July.

The move comes under the supermarket’s commitment to invest over £400m in store development in 2023.

Those employed as store assistants will be able to earn up to £11 nationally, rising to £12.45 for roles inside the M25.

These salaries are set rise to £11.40 and £12.85 respectively from next month as Aldi hikes store assistant pay by 13%.

Aldi UK real estate director George Brown said: “Demand for Aldi has never been higher, and more than two thirds of British households already shop with us.

“However, there are still too many people for whom shopping at Aldi isn’t a convenient option and we’re committed to changing that, giving even more people access to our award-winning products at unbeatable prices.”

He continued: “To meet that demand, we are investing in new stores up and down the country and won’t stop until we’ve made quality, affordable food accessible to everyone.”

The news comes after Which? crowned Aldi as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the 12th month running, based on a basket of 40 groceries.

Lidl came in as the second most affordable store, while Asda was named the cheapest amongst the Big 4 grocers.
