Aldi unveils new batch of price cuts on food essentials

Aldi has cut the price of dozens of household essentials to keep its prices competitive against other leading supermarkets.

The German grocer has lowered the cost of more than 30 items, including apples, oranges, butter, canned food and personal hygiene products, by an average of 7%.

It is the latest of more than 130 prices the supermarket has lowered in the past two months across its entire range.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Our promise is that we will always offer the lowest grocery prices and we’re doing everything we can to pass savings on to our customers.

“As Britain’s cheapest supermarket, shoppers are switching to Aldi from every other supermarket.”

Consumer group Which? named Aldi the UK’s cheapest supermarket in July for the 14th consecutive month, with customers saving 12% on a basket of goods compared with the traditional big four.

The move comes as British Retail Consortium and NielsenIQ retail analysts reported a slowdown in UK price inflation to 13.4% in July from 14.6% in June – the lowest level since December 2022.

Despite that, crippling grocery bills remain a major concern for many households, while retailers warn that further supply chain issues could add to input costs in the months ahead.
