THG gets net-zero targets validated by official body

THG has had its net-zero science-based targets validated by the official target-setting body.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – the gold standard for setting and monitoring corporate climate targets – has approved the group’s target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions across its own operations by 97.7% by 2040, and across the wider supply chain by 90% within the same timeframe.

THG has also committed to achieving science-based targets for 85% of its supplier spending, which will cover purchased goods, services, and upstream transportation and distribution by 2027.

The SBTi said the group’s sustainability targets align with the latest climate science, aimed at limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius target, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

THG chief executive Matt Moulding said: “THG has taken a significant stride forward as our net-zero targets have been officially validated by the SBTi.

“Two years ago, we signed a commitment letter with the SBTi stating that we would be aligning our climate mitigation targets with the latest science.

“Today, the validation of our net zero targets by the SBTi reaffirms our dedication to achieving a net-zero status as a company, minimizing our climate impact.”

Chief sustainability officer Mark Jones added: “Since the launch of our sustainability strategy in 2021, we have implemented near-term and long-term company-wide emission reductions in line with the latest climate science.”

THG becomes the latest retail group to receive the SBTi’s validation, following in the footsteps of the John Lewis Partnership which became the first UK retailer to have its net-zero science-based targets validated by the official body.
