Lidl crowned third largest supermarket in London, overtaking Asda

Lidl has become the third largest supermarket in London, overtaking rival retailer Asda as it hits a market share high of 9.1%.

The grocer experienced the fastest growth out of all supermarkets in the city and was named the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK overall by Kantar.

The supermarket said its growth forms part of its £500m investment into the capital under its strategy to ensure all Londoners have a Lidl store within easy reach.

Lidl CEO Ryan McDonnell said: “We know convenience plays a huge factor when choosing where to shop in the city, which is why we’re pushing on with plans to bring many more locations to the capital in the future.”

The news comes as the supermarket opened nine new London stores last year and secured five further sites in the city for future expansion.

Lidl currently trades from over 100 stores in London and within the M25, and has plans to open 100 more.

Early next year, Lidl also has plans to open another store in East Ham, and it has started construction at its Newbury Park and Bellingham sites.
